TAXI

TAXI –. Taxis may be used to travel anywhere in Malta or Gozo and may be hired by using any of the following methods:
By hailing in places where it is safe to stop;

From designated taxi stands;

By booking from taxi booths; or

On a pre-booking basis by phone, emails, internet, etc…

In Malta there are currently 250 licensed taxis that may be recognized from the black and white taxi sign fixed on the roof and registration marks printed on the front doors. The color of taxis is typically white although some may have adverts. These taxis may operate to and from any location in Malta, but cannot be driven on the island of Gozo.

The 50 taxis operating in Gozo can be recognized from the red and white taxi sign and registration marks printed on the front doors. These taxis can operate trips between any locality in Gozo and may only be driven in Malta if performing a trip to the Malta International Airport, or any hospital situated in Malta.

Taxi Drivers must have a Driver’s Permit and Tag issued by Transport Malta.

When a taxi is hired out from a location where there is no authorized taxi booth, the fare is calculated through the use of a taxi meter that calculates the fare based on the following structure:

Initial Fare:                              €3.50;

First 8km:                                €1.40 per km;

From 8km onwards:             €1.00 per km;

Waiting charge when taxi is stationary or driving at a speed lower than 20km/h for at least 3 consecutive minutes:  €4.20 per hour.

On the 25th December and on the 1st January of each year there is a flat additional charge of €7.00 for every trip. These fares are the maximum that may be charged for a taxi trip. The taxi driver may give customers discounts on the above fares.
